Types of Sensors Used in Automobiles

May 4, 2022

In this day and age, there are many automotive sensors that play huge roles in the overall function of your car. Some measure oil pressure, temperature, emissions, fluid levels, etc. Understanding how each of them work is essential. Below are some of the most important ones that you should know about:

  • Mass airflow sensor: Measures the quantity of air entering the engine.
  • Oxygen Sensor: Measures the amount of oxygen (O2) in a gas or liquid.
  • Engine Speed Sensor: Enables your vehicle to run smoothly by transmitting information with the ECU.
  • Spark Knock Sensor: Senses the condition of spark knock, which happens when gasoline starts burning before it should.
  • Coolant Sensor: The coolant sensor calculates the engine's temperature through the fuel system.
  • Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAF) Sensor: Delivers real-time manifold pressure measurements for the ECU during engien startup.
  • Fuel Temperature Sensor: Determines how much fuel is required for your car to operate consistently.
  • Camshaft Position Sensor: The engine control unit can determine the precise position of the crankshaft drive with the camshaft position sensor.
  • Throttle Position Sensor: Calculates and monitors the air intake of the engine.
  • Vehicle Speed Sensor: A little instrument mounted on your vehicle's transmission to calculate the speed at which your car is moving.
