How to Check Your Car’s Tire Pressure

July 12, 2021

Though it is recommended to check your tires once a month, you should check your tires as much as you can. Having the incorrect tire pressure can lead to uneven tread wear, which can ultimately lower your gas mileage and affect your vehicle's handling. Don't worry, though, because we've got you covered. Here's our guide to perfecting your tire checking routine.

HOW TO FIND THE PRESSURE REQUIREMENTS FOR YOUR CAR

Before you pull out any tools, you need to know how much air your wheels need. Tire pressure is measured in units of psi or pounds per square inch. On the driver's door side, you should find a sticker that indicates the recommended tire pressure. If you have trouble locating the sticker, then you can also refer to the owner's manual.

HOW TO CHECK TIRE PRESSURE

The perfect time to check your tires pressure is when the car has been idle for at least a couple of hours and the tires are cold. You will most likely need a tire pressure gauge which can usually be found at gas stations or purchased at auto parts stores.

  1. Loosen the cap from the air valve on the tire, and put it somewhere you won't lose it (like your pockets).
  2. Press the tire gauge on the open valve stem for several seconds. You should hear the hiss of the air.
  3. Read the air pressure gauge.
  4. Compare the number you see with the recommended tire pressure.
  5. Return the tire's air valve cap to its place. (Hold off on this step if you need to modify the air pressure.)
  6. Repeat steps 1-5 for each tire.

When checking your tire pressure, also make a note of its treadwear and any leaks. If you have a newer model vehicle, your car might have a tire-pressure monitoring system. The system has built-in tire pressure sensors that allow all four tire pressures to be read concurrently from inside the vehicle.

Your tires are one of your car's most important safety components, which is why you should handle them with care. If you successfully get in the habit of checking your tires every month, you can adjust the pressure as it fluctuates throughout the year.
